Savings by women drop 12% on rising cost of living – study

  The rising cost of living and stagnant incomes has reduced the saving culture of cash-strapped Nigerians, especially women. According to a recent Global Findex report by the World Bank, the percentage of adult women who saved at financial institutions declined by 8.6 percentage points to 12.3 percent in 2021 from 20.9 percent in 2011. The 12.3 percent is also lower than the 23.1 percent of adult men who saved in 2021. Analysts, who were not surprised by the data, said the current socio-economic indicators such as elevated poverty levels, rising inflation, high unemployment, low incomes, and weak purchasing power are affecting people’s ability to save. Rising price of eggs, chicken hurting protein consumption

Cheaper substitutes such as eggs and offals (organ meats) used by most households to supplement their protein needs are going out of reach as prices are rising, according to a recent report by SBM Intelligence. The report titled ‘Brace for Impact’, stated that eggs have become an adequate substitute for most Nigerians as they strive to reduce the cost of buying bigger protein meals.
